Chairs’ Message

I would like to welcome you to the 11th Global Symposium on Millimeter-Waves (GSMM 2018) to be held in Boulder, Colorado.  This is the first time that GSMM has been in the United States and only the second time it has been in North America.  We are very excited about the symposium and think that we have a great program in store for you.  The main theme of the symposium is “Millimeter- wave Propagation: Hardware, Measurements and Systems.”  In addition to the main symposium, there will be a co-located IEEE 5G Summit and the day after the symposium there will be a meeting of the 5G Channel Modelling Alliance.  There will also be a tour of the millimeter-wave labs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Boulder Colorado is a remarkable town poised at the foot of the Rocky Mountain Range.  It boasts world class research, a highly rated university, many high-tech industries and has been voted as one of the healthiest cities in the US for over 10 years.  It also was voted as the happiest city in the US in 2017.  There are many activities from shopping on the Pearl St. Mall to hiking the many trails in the foothills, not to mention the 24 craft breweries.  At an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m) with over 300 days of sunshine a year, don’t forget your sunblock!

The GSMM 2018 Steering Committee has been working very hard to put together a great event.  The technical program is loaded with talks from areas like Millimeter-Wave Antennas and Passive Devices, Millimeter-Wave and THz Communications, Millimeter-Wave and THz Sensing, Sub-Millimeter-Wave and THz Technologies, Millimeter-Wave Active Devices and ICs and Emerging Technologies and Applications.  The 5G Summit has many excellent talks focused on hardware that is enabling the vision of 5G technology and there will be a very interesting panel discussion at the end of the Summit on the trade-offs between bandwidth, efficiency, battery life, complexity and cost in “What do we need to build 5G mmWave mobile handsets?”

On behalf of the GSMM 2018 Steering Committee, I take great pleasure to invite you to join us for GSMM 2018.  Participate and network at the Symposium, enjoy the social aspects of the meeting (the Welcome Reception and the Banquet (with great entertainment!)).  And don’t forget to experience Boulder!

I look forward to seeing you!
